Here’s What Research Shows…
To Summarize: Clinical research has found associations between Berberine supplementation and weight loss, improved blood sugar levels, reductions in cholesterol, and improved gastrointestinal health.
Berberine, a compound found in plants like Berberis, has been used in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine for over 3000 years, and has historically used to treat digestive issues and skin conditions. Recently, scientific research has been exploring its potential benefits in treating metabolic conditions such as diabetes, high cholesterol, and obesity. Berberine has been proven effective for…
- Blood Sugar Regulation
- Cardiovascular Health
- Weight Loss
This article highlights three studies whose results support these claims.
STUDY 1: Blood Sugar.
This pilot study lasted 13 weeks and involved 31 male and female newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes patients. The study intended to assess the efficacy of berberine, and compared it to metformin (a diabetes drug).
Key Findings:
- Berberine demonstrated efficacy similar to metformin in controlling blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes patients.
- Berberine also showed potential benefits in reducing triglycerides and cholesterol levels.
STUDY 2: Cholesterol and Body Weight.
This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involved 106 male and female patients with type 2 diabetes and dyslipidemia. The trial lasted 3 months.
Key Findings:
- Berberine was effective in reducing blood sugar, lipid levels, body weight, and BMI in type 2 diabetic patients with dyslipidemia.
- Significant decrease in fasting plasma glucose with berberine (from 7.0 to 5.6 mM/litre) compared to placebo (from 6.8 to 6.4 mM/litre).
- Postload plasma glucose and Haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels also significantly decreased with berberine treatment compared to placebo.
- Triglyceride levels decreased significantly with berberine (from 2.51 to 1.61 mM/L) and slightly increased with placebo.
- Total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) levels decreased with berberine treatment compared to slight decreases or increases with placebo.
STUDY 3: Gastrointestinal Health.
This randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involved 132 male and female patients and lasted 14 weeks. The purpose of the study was to investigate if berberine hydrochloride is effective in alleviating symptoms of diarrhoea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
Key Findings:
- Significant reductions in the frequency of diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and urgent need for defecation in patients treated with berberine hydrochloride compared to placebo over the 8-week treatment period.
- Patients taking berberine hydrochloride showed trends of improvement in IBS symptom scores, depression scores, anxiety scores, and quality of life measures related to IBS.
- The study suggests that berberine hydrochloride may be effective in reducing symptoms and improving the quality of life in patients with diarrhoea-predominant IBS.
